A lightweight Korean hydrating serum for dry, dehydrated, sensitive or easily irritated skin that needs moisture without a heavy or complicated formula.
iUNIK Beta-Glucan Power Moisture Serum combines mushroom-derived beta-glucan with glycerin, Sodium PCA and adenosine in a minimalist 10-ingredient formula designed to increase hydration, support the skin barrier and leave skin feeling softer, calmer and more resilient.
Beta-glucan is a humectant, which means it helps attract and retain water in the skin. That makes this serum particularly useful when your skin feels tight, dehydrated or uncomfortable — including the slightly confusing situation where your skin is oily on the surface but still feels dehydrated underneath.
The light gel-serum texture gives you hydration without relying on rich oils or creams, so it works equally well underneath a nourishing moisturiser for dry skin or within a lighter routine for combination and oily skin.
It is also one of those products that makes sense when your routine already contains enough “active” ingredients. If you use retinal, retinol, exfoliating acids or acne treatments, this can simply do the quieter job of adding hydration and supporting skin comfort.
Especially suited to
• Dry or dehydrated skin
• Sensitive or easily irritated skin
• A weakened or uncomfortable skin barrier
• Oily or combination skin that feels dehydrated underneath
• Skin experiencing tightness or dryness from retinoids or exfoliating treatments
• Blemish-prone skin that needs lightweight hydration
• Anyone wanting a simple hydrating serum without fragrance or essential oils
Why you'll love it
• Beta-glucan-focused serum for long-lasting hydration and barrier support
• Minimalist formula with just 10 ingredients
• Glycerin and Sodium PCA provide additional humectant hydration
• Adenosine supports smoother and more elastic-looking skin
• Lightweight gel texture layers easily without feeling heavy
• Suitable for morning and evening routines
Texture
A silky, lightweight gel-serum that spreads easily and absorbs without the richness of a cream.
It leaves skin feeling comfortably hydrated and slightly dewy, making it easy to layer underneath moisturiser and SPF.
Good to know
This is primarily a hydration and barrier-support serum — not an exfoliant, acne treatment or intensive anti-ageing active.
And that can actually be its strength.
If your routine already contains vitamin C, acids, retinal, retinol or other targeted treatments, you don't necessarily need another serum trying to correct something. Sometimes the most useful addition is simply a formula that helps keep your skin hydrated and comfortable enough to tolerate the rest of your routine.
It is also worth understanding what “barrier support” means.
Beta-glucan and humectants can help improve hydration and support a healthier skin barrier, but this serum does not provide the same mixture of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids that a dedicated barrier moisturiser may contain.
If your barrier is significantly compromised — burning, peeling, extremely tight or suddenly reacting to everything — pair hydration with an appropriate moisturiser and reduce whatever is irritating your skin rather than expecting one serum to repair everything.
Use morning and/or evening after cleansing and toner.
Apply 2–3 drops evenly across the face and gently pat into the skin until absorbed.
Follow with any additional treatment serum if required, then moisturiser.
In the morning, finish with SPF.
If your skin is particularly dry or dehydrated, make sure you follow with moisturiser rather than relying on the serum alone to hold all that hydration in.

Tips to get the most out of it
• Think of this as your hydration step rather than another treatment you have to carefully schedule
• It can be used morning and evening and does not need cycling in the way that retinoids or exfoliating acids often do
• If your skin feels oily but tight after cleansing, don't assume you need less hydration — dehydration and oiliness can occur at the same time
• If you're starting retinal or retinol, keeping the rest of your routine simple with a hydrating serum like this and a good moisturiser can make the routine much easier to manage
• Dry skin will usually benefit from layering a richer moisturiser over it, while oily skin can choose a lighter moisturiser
• If your skin is irritated from over-exfoliation, adding this serum can support hydration, but reduce the exfoliation as well
• You don't need both a hyaluronic acid serum and this serum simply because both are hydrating. If one good hydration serum is doing the job, keep the routine simple
• Apply your moisturiser once the serum has absorbed comfortably — there is no need for long waiting periods between steps
What is iUNIK Beta-Glucan Power Moisture Serum best for?
Its main job is hydration.
We would particularly recommend it when skin feels dehydrated, tight, sensitive, easily irritated or less resilient than usual.
It is also a useful supporting serum for routines containing stronger treatments such as retinol, retinal or exfoliating acids.
-
What is beta-glucan?
Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide found naturally in sources including mushrooms, yeast and oats.
In skincare it is valued primarily for its ability to attract and retain moisture while supporting skin comfort and barrier function.
The beta-glucan used in this iUNIK serum is mushroom-derived.
-
Is beta-glucan better than hyaluronic acid?
We wouldn't describe either ingredient as universally “better”.
Both can act as humectants and help increase skin hydration, but they are different molecules and the finished product formulation matters as much as the ingredient name.
If you already love your hyaluronic acid serum, there is no reason you need to replace it.
If HA-heavy formulas haven't suited you, or you simply want a minimalist alternative focused on hydration and barrier comfort, beta-glucan is well worth considering.
-
Do I need this and a hyaluronic acid serum?
Probably not.
You can layer them, but there is rarely a need to collect multiple serums that are fundamentally performing the same hydration job.
Start with one. If your skin stays comfortably hydrated, your routine is already doing what it needs to do.
-
Is iUNIK Beta-Glucan Power Moisture Serum good for sensitive skin?
It is particularly well suited to sensitive and reactive skin.
The current formula is minimalist, contains just 10 ingredients and does not contain added fragrance or essential oils.
That doesn't guarantee that every sensitive skin type will tolerate it — no skincare product can — so introduce it normally if your skin is extremely reactive.
-
Is it good for a damaged skin barrier?
It can be an excellent supporting product when dehydration and sensitivity accompany a weakened barrier.
But remember that a damaged barrier usually needs more than a hydrating serum.
Follow it with a suitable moisturiser and temporarily reduce exfoliants, retinoids or other products that may be contributing to irritation.
-
Can oily skin use it?
Yes.
Oily skin can still be dehydrated, and the lightweight gel texture makes this particularly easy to incorporate without adding a rich or greasy layer.
If your face becomes shiny but simultaneously feels tight after washing, dehydration may be part of the picture.
-
Is it suitable for acne-prone skin?
Yes, particularly when blemish-prone skin also feels dehydrated or irritated from acne treatments.
It isn't designed to treat acne, unclog pores or replace an acne treatment.
Its role is hydration and skin-barrier support.
-
Can I use it with retinol or retinal?
Yes.
There is no need to alternate beta-glucan and retinoids.
A simple evening routine could be:
Cleanser → hydrating toner if wanted → iUNIK Beta-Glucan Serum → retinal/retinol → moisturiser
If your skin is very sensitive, you can also keep your retinoid routine even simpler and use the serum at another point in the day.
-
Can I use it with AHA or BHA?
Yes.
There is no inherent conflict between beta-glucan and exfoliating acids.
In fact, a hydrating serum can make sense within an exfoliation routine because acids can sometimes leave skin feeling drier.
If your skin is already burning or peeling, however, pause the exfoliation rather than trying to counteract irritation with more skincare.
-
Can I use it with Vitamin C?
Yes.
You could comfortably use both in the same morning routine if your skin tolerates them.
For example:
Vitamin C → iUNIK Beta-Glucan Serum → moisturiser → SPF
If you prefer fewer layers, use one in the morning and the other in the evening.
-
Does it replace moisturiser?
Usually, no.
This is primarily a humectant-rich serum. It helps add and retain hydration, but a moisturiser performs additional functions by providing emollient and/or occlusive ingredients that help reduce moisture loss.
Dry or barrier-compromised skin in particular should follow it with moisturiser.
-
What is the difference between dehydrated and dry skin?
Dry skin is a skin type that naturally produces less oil.
Dehydrated skin is lacking water and can happen to any skin type — including oily skin.
That is why someone can have a shiny forehead and still experience tightness, rough texture or uncomfortable skin after cleansing.
This serum can work for both situations, but genuinely dry skin will usually need a richer moisturiser over it.
-
How often can I use it?
It can be used every day, morning and evening if desired.
Unlike retinol or exfoliating acids, there is no need to gradually build up a complicated usage schedule purely because beta-glucan is the hero ingredient.
Beta-Glucan (400,000ppm), Water, Glycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Butylene Glycol, Adenosine, Tromethamine, Sodium PCA, Carbomer, Sodium Polyacrylate
