Finding good Korean skincare isn't the hard part any more. You can buy a cleanser everyone loves, a serum you saw online, a toner a friend recommended and a sunscreen with thousands of reviews.

That still leaves the same questions. What goes first? What belongs together? What do you use in the morning, and what only at night? Do you start everything on day one?

The Glass Skin Blueprint is my answer to those questions. It's a set I put together from products we stock, with the routine already worked out and printed on cards in the box. This article is about that set, what's in it, who I'd choose it for and who I wouldn't.

The short answer

WHAT IS THE GLASS SKIN BLUEPRINT?

Seven full-size Korean skincare products chosen to work as one morning and evening routine, plus six printed Blueprint Cards that tell you what to use, in what order, how much, and how to bring the serum in gradually. It costs £119, compared with £134.44 for the seven products bought separately, and ships free in the UK. Most of the routine lasts around 3 to 4 months, although you'll go through the sunscreen sooner.

What are the seven products actually doing?

Every product in the set has one job, and the order is part of the routine. Here they are, in the order you use them.

  1. Cleansing oil: Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Moisture Cleansing Oil, Unscented (150 ml).Your first cleanse in the evening, for the nights you've worn make-up or a heavier sunscreen, or when one cleanse doesn't feel like enough.
  2. Cleanser: Round Lab Birch Juice Cleanser (150 ml).Your everyday cleanser. Washes away oil and dirt. In the evening it goes after the oil on the nights you use both. In the morning you can use it, or just rinse with water if your skin feels comfortable.
  3. Toner: I'm From Rice Toner (150 ml).Softens skin, morning and evening.
  4. Serum: Anua Niacinamide 10 TXA 4 Serum (30 ml).The brightening step. Evenings only, and brought in gradually.
  5. Snail essence: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence (100 ml).Helps skin hold on to moisture and feel smoother.

The oil is in the set because it's a reliable first cleanse for make-up and sunscreen. It doesn't mean you need two cleansers every night. On a quiet day, one gentle cleanse can be enough, and I've written more about that in do you need to double cleanse every night?

What isn't in the set matters too. There are no retinoids and no strong exfoliating acids. Glass skin, the healthy, hydrated look this set is named after, comes from layered hydration, gentle brightening and doing the same routine consistently. Stronger actives can come later, once your skin is settled, if you want them.

Why not just buy the seven products separately?

You could. Bought one by one from our shop, the same seven products come to £134.44. But seven products without a plan still leave you with seven decisions: which goes first, how much to use, whether the serum goes on in the morning, what to do if your skin doesn't like something.

The Blueprint Cards make those decisions for you. They're printed, they sit on your shelf, and there are six of them:

Inside every set

SIX PRINTED BLUEPRINT CARDS

  • Start here: what's in your box and what each product is for.
  • Your first weeks: a simple plan for introducing the serum, and a slower route if your skin is sensitive or reactive.
  • Your morning routine: five numbered steps.
  • Your evening routine: six numbered steps.
  • If something doesn't feel right: exactly what to do.
  • Keep going: running out, adding something new, using the serum in the morning too.

The cards are also specific in a way a product label can't be. The evening card, for example, says one to two pumps of cleansing oil massaged over dry skin for about a minute, a coin-size amount of cleanser, enough toner to wet your palms, two to three drops of serum, one pump of essence and a pea-size amount of cream.

The serum has its own schedule. In week 1 you use it on two evenings, not in a row. In week 2, every other evening. From week 3, every evening if your skin is comfortable. If your skin is sensitive or reactive, the cards tell you to test first and stay on two evenings a week for longer.

That's why I made the cards. I made the classic mistake myself after a trip to Korea: three new products at once, and my skin didn't like it. Good products weren't the problem. Starting everything together, with no order, was.

Seven products without a plan is still seven decisions. The Blueprint makes them for you.

Who I'd choose the Glass Skin Blueprint for

I'd choose it if:

  • you want a complete Korean skincare routine, not one more product
  • you like a hydrated, dewy finish
  • your skin is dry, dehydrated, normal or combination
  • your skin looks dull or tired, or your tone is a little uneven
  • you're starting from very little, or rebuilding a routine that's got muddled
  • you'd rather someone else worked out the order

Who it isn't for

I'd rather you bought the right thing than this set.

  • You already have a routine you love. If your cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen are working, you don't need seven new products. Buy the one step you're missing.
  • Your skin is very oily and you like a matte finish. This routine leans hydrating and dewy.
  • Your skin is stinging, burning or reacting easily right now, or you're in an active rosacea flare. Calm things down first; this isn't the routine to start in the middle of a flare.
  • You use prescription skincare. Check with your prescriber before adding anything.
  • You're looking for one targeted product. Then buy one targeted product.

Would the Glass Skin Blueprint make a good Christmas gift?

Yes, especially for someone who loves skincare but never quite knows what to use together, or who has wanted to try Korean skincare and doesn't know where to start.

That's what makes it a better gift than a bag of separate products. She isn't left with seven bottles and a puzzle. She gets the complete routine and the printed cards showing her how to use it, from the first morning. It works for a birthday too, or as a treat to yourself.

A few honest notes before you buy it as a surprise:

  • If you don't know her skin at all, a complete routine is a bigger guess than a single product. If she has very oily skin, very reactive skin, allergies or a diagnosed skin condition, I'd be more careful.
  • If she's pregnant or breastfeeding, or has a skin condition, the first card asks her to check before she starts.
  • If something doesn't suit her, the routine promise above applies, so she can contact us for help or a swap.

If you don't know her skin, or she has very oily or very reactive skin, a single product may be the safer surprise.

Does the Glass Skin Blueprint contain retinol?

No. There are no retinoids and no strong exfoliating acids in the set. The serum contains niacinamide and tranexamic acid and is introduced gradually, in the evenings only.

Can I use it if I have sensitive skin?

Possibly, but I wouldn't call any seven-product routine universally suitable for sensitive skin. The Blueprint Cards include a slower route for skin that reacts easily, including patch testing and introducing the serum less often. If your skin is currently stinging, burning or flaring, I wouldn't start a new routine yet.

What if I already own one of the products?
