  • My skin’s been super dry and reactive lately and this cream really helped. it feels thick at first but sinks in so nicely and doesn’t leave that heavy greasy layer. my redness calmed down after just a few nights. def recommend if your skin barrier is struggling.

Dr.Althea 147 Barrier Cream is a ceramide moisturiser named after its formula: 1 patented ingredient (peony flower extract), 4 nourishing ingredients and 7 types of hyaluronic acid, with six ceramides and cholesterol. It helps dry, tight or sensitised skin feel comfortable and hydrated, with a soft, healthy-looking finish.

What it does

Six ceramides (NP, AS, AP, NS, NG and EOP), cholesterol and fatty acids replenish the lipids that help skin hold on to water. Avocado, kale and artemisia extracts are there for nourishment, and guaiazulene for a calmer, more comfortable feel.

Why we chose it

We chose it as an everyday barrier moisturiser for dry, tight or sensitised skin: ceramides, cholesterol and layered hyaluronic acid in one step, with no fragrance or essential oils in the listed ingredients. It is a lighter-feeling alternative to Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin Cream, which contains essential oils.

Best for

  • Dry, tight or dehydrated skin
  • Skin that feels sensitised by retinoids or acids
  • Normal to combination skin that wants moisture without greasiness
  • Dryness from cold weather or central heating
  • A daily moisturiser in a barrier-first routine

Not ideal if

  • Your skin is very oily and you want a gel: Dr.G R.E.D Blemish Clear Soothing Cream is lighter
  • You react to plant extracts: it contains peony, coptis root, artemisia (mugwort) and gardenia extracts
  • You need to know every oil: "vegetable oil" is listed without the plant named

Key ingredients

  • Paeonia albiflora (peony) flower extract: the brand's patented ingredient, for barrier support
  • Six ceramides with cholesterol: help keep moisture in
  • Seven forms of hyaluronic acid: hydration
  • Avocado, kale and artemisia extracts: nourishment
  • Guaiazulene: comfort for skin that feels irritated

Texture and finish

Where it goes in your routine

Morning and evening, as the last or second-to-last step: after toner, essence and serum. Smooth a small amount over the face and neck, avoiding the eyes. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.

What to expect

Skin feels softer and more comfortable from the first use. Barrier comfort and resilience build gradually with steady daily use.

Good to know

  • No fragrance or essential oils in the listed ingredients
  • Contains an unnamed "vegetable oil"
  • Contains plant extracts, including peony, coptis root and artemisia
  • No retinoid and no exfoliating acids

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

It depends on your skin. There is no fragrance, essential oil, retinoid or exfoliating acid in the listed ingredients, and the ceramides and cholesterol are there to help skin hold on to moisture. It does contain several plant extracts, including peony, coptis root, artemisia and gardenia, so patch test first if those have bothered you before.

Can oily skin use it?

Combination skin usually gets on well with the silky, non-greasy finish. If your skin is very oily and you prefer a gel, Dr.G R.E.D Blemish Clear Soothing Cream is the lighter option we would choose.

How is it different from Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin Cream?

Both are ceramide moisturisers. The 147 Barrier Cream feels lighter and has no essential oils in its list, while Ceramidin contains essential oils. Choose the 147 if you avoid essential oils or want a silkier finish.

Can I use it with retinol or exfoliating acids?

Yes. It contains neither, so it works as the moisturiser on those evenings and helps skin that feels dry or tight from actives feel more comfortable.

Will it help with redness?

It is a moisturiser, not a redness treatment. It can help dry, sensitised skin feel calmer and more comfortable, but persistent redness or flushing is worth discussing with a pharmacist or GP.
