After cleansing, morning and evening. Soak a cotton pad and wipe gently over the face and neck two or three times, or pat a small amount in with your hands. For extra hydration, leave a soaked pad on dry areas for 10 minutes. Follow with serum and moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning.

  • On nights you use a retinoid or an acid serum, skip it or switch to a hydrating toner, so you keep to one exfoliating step.
  • Follow with serum and moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning: exfoliated skin needs daily sun protection.

Does it contain acids?

No. Our box lists no AHA, BHA or PHA. It exfoliates with protease, an enzyme that helps loosen dull surface cells. It is still an exfoliating step, so treat it as one in your routine.

Can I use it with retinal or an acid serum?

Carefully. It works best as your only exfoliating step. On nights you use a retinoid or an acid, skip it or use a hydrating toner instead, and use it on the other days.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

It depends on your skin. There are no acids, fragrance or essential oils on our box, and it is sold as a gentle daily exfoliating toner. An enzyme still exfoliates, though, so patch test first and start with once a day if your skin is very reactive.

Will it help with pores?

It can help the surface look smoother and pores look clearer, because it loosens the dull, rough build-up that makes them more noticeable. It will not change the size of your pores.

Is it hydrating as well?

Yes. Panthenol, betaine, sodium hyaluronate and beta-glucan are all on our box, so it doubles as a watery hydration layer. If you only want hydration with no exfoliating ingredient, Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner is the one we would choose.
