PURCELL Pixcell Biom 2Billion/mL is a five-ingredient first-step serum built on two ferment lysates, bifida and lactobacillus, which are the first two ingredients on the list. It helps stressed, sensitive or over-treated skin feel calmer and more resilient, and gives a soft, dewy base for the rest of your routine.
What it does
Ferment lysates are broken-down probiotic bacteria, not live cultures, and they are widely used to support the skin barrier and help skin feel less reactive. The name refers to PURCELL's measure of two billion probiotic cells per millilitre. With only five ingredients and no fragrance listed, it is an easy step to add when you want to keep a routine short.
Why we chose it
After Korea I added three new products at once and my skin reacted. This is the product I wish I had had then: five ingredients, water-light, and no exfoliating acids or retinoid that need a slow start.
Best for
- Sensitive or easily irritated skin
- Skin stressed by retinoids, acids or acne treatments
- Dehydrated skin that feels tight
- Oily or combination skin that wants barrier care without heaviness
- A calm first layer in a glass-skin routine
Not ideal if
- You want a targeted treatment for dark spots, lines or breakouts: it does not contain one
- You want it to replace your moisturiser: it is a light treatment layer
- Your skin is burning or peeling: simplify the routine first, then add this
Key ingredients
- Bifida ferment lysate (first on the list): barrier support and comfort
- Lactobacillus ferment lysate (second on the list): a calmer, more balanced feel
- Butylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol and ethylhexylglycerin: hydration and keeping the formula stable
Texture and finish
Water-light, closer to an essence than a serum. It absorbs quickly and leaves skin soft.
Where it goes in your routine
The first step after cleansing, before toner. Pat a small amount into the skin, morning, evening or both, then carry on with the rest of your routine.
What to expect
Skin should feel comfortable from the first use. Barrier support builds gradually with steady use, especially alongside a gentle routine.
Quick facts: 30 ml · 5 ingredients · No fragrance in the ingredient list · AM and PM · PURCELL, made in Korea
- Use it as the first leave-on step after cleansing, before toner, morning, evening or both.
- Pat a small amount over the face until absorbed.
- Follow with toner, serum and moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning.
- It is a light treatment layer, not a moisturiser, so always follow with one, especially if your skin is dry.
- It has no acids or retinoid, so it can sit in the same routine as yours. If your skin is burning or peeling, cut back the actives first rather than adding more layers.

Good to know
- Ferment lysates are broken-down probiotic bacteria, not live cultures
- No fragrance in the ingredient list
Does it contain live probiotics, and what does "2Billion/mL" mean?
No live probiotics. The ingredient list contains bifida and lactobacillus ferment lysates, which are broken-down bacteria rather than live cultures. "2Billion/mL" is PURCELL's specification for its Pixcell Biom ferment material; it does not mean you are putting two billion living bacteria on your skin.
Should I use it before or after toner?
Before. PURCELL position it as a first-step treatment, so use it straight after cleansing, then toner, serum and moisturiser. If you have used it after toner now and then, you have not wasted it.
Is it good for a damaged-feeling skin barrier?
That is one of the main reasons we would choose it: it is a simple, barrier-focused layer that sits easily under moisturiser. It works best as part of a gentle routine. If you keep over-exfoliating or using strong actives every night, adding this alone is unlikely to fix the problem.
Can I use it with retinol, retinal or exfoliating acids?
Yes. There is no obvious reason to separate ferment lysates from retinoids or acids, and a simple barrier layer makes sense in that kind of routine. It will not make an over-strong schedule comfortable, though: if your skin is burning, peeling or getting more sensitive, use the active less often.
Can oily or acne-prone skin use it?
Usually, yes. The texture is water-light, so it rarely feels heavy, and it can suit acne-prone skin that has become dehydrated or sensitised from cleansing or acne products. It is not an acne treatment and will not clear blocked pores or breakouts on its own.
Does it replace my moisturiser?
No. It is a light treatment layer, not a moisturiser. Follow it with one to help hold moisture in.
