Innisfree Retinol Cica Repair Ampoule combines retinol with centella (cica) compounds, niacinamide, ceramide NP and a little salicylic acid, a BHA. It helps smooth the look of texture and pores and fade the look of post-blemish marks on blemish-prone skin.

What it does

Retinol, a form of vitamin A, encourages smoother-looking skin over time. Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble exfoliating acid that works inside pores. Centella compounds, ceramide NP, cholesterol and hyaluronic acid keep skin comfortable, and niacinamide helps even the look of tone.

Why we chose it

We chose it as a first retinol for blemish-prone skin with rough texture and visible pores, with centella compounds, ceramide NP and cholesterol alongside the retinol and a little salicylic acid. Innisfree describe it as suitable for daily use and position it for sensitive skin, but it still contains two actives, so whether it suits you depends on your skin: start slowly and patch test.

Best for

  • Blemish-prone skin and post-blemish marks
  • Rough texture and visible pores
  • Dull, uneven-looking tone
  • A first step into retinol, taken slowly
  • Sensitive skin that introduces it cautiously, after a patch test

Not ideal if

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding: it contains retinol and salicylic acid, so ask your doctor or pharmacist first
  • You use another retinoid: do not layer two. Innisfree also advise against strong AHA exfoliants and scrubs with it
  • You are allergic to aspirin or salicylates, or to soy: it contains salicylic acid and soybean oil
  • Your skin is very reactive or already irritated, peeling or sensitised: Innisfree position it for sensitive skin, but it contains retinol and salicylic acid, so let your skin settle first, then patch test and start on a few evenings a week

Key ingredients

  • Ceramide NP, cholesterol and hyaluronic acid: barrier support and hydration

  • Contains salicylic acid (BHA), an exfoliating acid
  • Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice

How strong is the retinol?

Innisfree do not state the retinol amount, so we won't guess one. Treat it as a retinol product: introduce it slowly and judge it by how your skin feels.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

It can be a reasonable choice for sensitive skin, but not every sensitive skin will tolerate it. Innisfree position it for sensitive, blemish-prone skin and add centella compounds, ceramide NP and cholesterol for comfort, but it still contains retinol and a little salicylic acid. Introduce it cautiously: patch test on your jaw for a few days, then start on two or three evenings a week. If you notice stinging, redness or flaking, use it less often or stop. If your skin is already irritated or peeling, let it settle before you start.

Can I use it if I have never used retinol?

Yes, if you build up gradually. That is one of the reasons we chose it. Start a few evenings a week, follow with moisturiser, and some dryness at first is possible; if so, use it less often.

Can I use it with other actives?

Not with another retinoid. Innisfree advise against strong AHA exfoliants and scrubs alongside it, and as it already contains salicylic acid, keep other BHA products to different nights.

Will it help with breakouts?

It is a cosmetic ampoule, not an acne treatment. The salicylic acid helps keep pores clear and the retinol smooths the look of texture over time, so it suits blemish-prone skin and post-blemish marks. If breakouts are persistent or painful, a pharmacist or GP is the better first step.

Can I use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

It contains retinol and salicylic acid, so we don't recommend it then without advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
