Etude SoonJung pH 6.5 Whip Cleanser is a whipped foam cleanser with panthenol and madecassoside. Its mildly acidic, pH 6.5 formula washes away oil and daily grime and leaves sensitive skin feeling clean, soft and comfortable rather than tight.
What it does
The pump does the lathering for you: the foam comes out ready, so there is no rubbing to build it up. Underneath are two mild cleansing agents (lauryl glucoside and disodium cocoyl glutamate) alongside glycerin, sorbitol and panthenol, so the formula is designed for a gentler cleanse rather than that tight, squeaky finish. Madecassoside, from centella, is there to help skin feel calm afterwards.
Why we chose it
It does one job quietly. There are 14 ingredients and no fragrance in the list. The bottle says it is made without animal-derived ingredients, mineral oil or parabens. The foam needs almost no rubbing, which matters on mornings when skin already feels tight. It pairs with SoonJung 2x Barrier Cream from the same range.
Best for
- Sensitive or easily irritated skin
- Dry or dehydrated skin that feels tight after washing
- A gentle morning cleanse
- The second cleanse after an oil or balm
- Routines that include retinoids or exfoliating acids
Not ideal if
- You wear long-wear makeup or water-resistant sunscreen: remove it first with a balm such as House of Hur Midnight Soothing Cleansing Balm
- You want a squeaky-clean feel on very oily skin: this is deliberately mild
- You want it to take off mascara or eye makeup: it is not a makeup remover, and Etude say to keep it away from the eyes
Key ingredients
- Lauryl glucoside and disodium cocoyl glutamate: mild cleansing
- Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5): comfort and hydration
- Madecassoside: calms the look of irritation
- Glycerin and sorbitol: help skin hold on to water
Texture and finish
A thick, whipped-cream texture with rich micro bubbles. It rinses off cleanly and leaves skin soft.
Where it goes in your routine
Morning and evening. Pump 2 to 3 times, massage gently over a wet face and rinse with lukewarm water. In the evening, use it as the second cleanse after an oil or balm, then carry on with toner.
Good to know
Citric acid appears in the list to balance the pH; this is not an exfoliating cleanser.
Quick facts: 150 ml · pH 6.5 · Fragrance-free · AM and PM · Etude, made in Korea
- Use on a wet face. Press the pump 2 to 3 times; the foam comes out ready, so there is no need to work it up in your hands.
- Massage gently with your fingertips, keeping it away from the eyes. It does not need scrubbing.
- Rinse well with lukewarm water and pat dry.
- In the morning it works on its own. In the evening, if you wore sunscreen or makeup, use an oil or balm first and this as the second cleanse.
- Follow with toner or the next step in your routine.
- Patch test first if your skin is very reactive.
Water, Glycerin, Sorbitol, Propanediol, Lauryl Glucoside, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Panthenol, Citric Acid, Glyceryl Caprylate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Madecassoside, Butylene Glycol, Tocopherol, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract
Good to know
- Fragrance-free (Etude state it)
- Etude list it as free of animal-derived ingredients
- Citric acid is listed to balance the pH; not an exfoliating cleanser
- Cleansing agents are coconut- and sugar-derived
Will it remove my makeup or sunscreen?
It is a gentle face wash, not a makeup remover. If you wore long-wear makeup, water-resistant sunscreen or mascara, take that off first with an oil or balm, such as House of Hur Midnight Soothing Cleansing Balm, then use this.
Do I need to lather it?
No. The pump gives you ready-made foam. Put it straight on a wet face.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
It is made for it: mild cleansing agents and no fragrance in the ingredient list. The Korean label also says hypoallergenic testing was completed. No cleanser suits everyone, so patch test first if your skin reacts easily.
Why pH 6.5 and not 5.5?
Etude chose 6.5 and describe the formula as low pH. Skin's surface is usually more acidic than this, so 6.5 sits a little higher. It is still far below traditional soap-based cleansers, which are alkaline. The most useful test is how your skin feels afterwards: it should feel soft, not tight.
Can oily skin use it?
Yes, especially if your skin is oily but also easily irritated or dehydrated. If you prefer a very deep or squeaky clean finish, this may feel milder than you expect.
Is it vegan or cruelty-free?
The bottle says it is made without animal-derived ingredients. We have not seen a vegan or cruelty-free mark on our bottles, so we don't label it either way.
