COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser is a mild gel cleanser with a pH of about 5.3, plus betaine salicylate and tea tree leaf oil. It washes away overnight oil and the day's grime without a squeaky, stripped feel, and leaves skin fresh and clean.
What it does
Gentle cleansing agents (cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate) lift oil and dirt at a pH close to the skin's own. Betaine salicylate, a mild BHA-type ingredient, and tea tree leaf oil give a clarifying feel, while styrax, lotus and evening primrose extracts and allantoin keep it comfortable.
Why we chose it
We chose it as a morning cleanser for skin that dislikes a stripped feel: our tube describes a low pH formula that cleanses "without the stripping feeling", and COSRX put the pH at 5.31, plus or minus 1. It works just as well as the second step of an evening double cleanse.
Best for
- Oily or combination skin, or drier skin that dislikes a stripped feel
- A fresh morning cleanse
- The second step of an evening double cleanse
- Skin that feels tight after foaming cleansers
- Pores that look congested
Not ideal if
- You avoid essential oils: it contains tea tree leaf oil
- You avoid acids or already use strong exfoliants: it contains betaine salicylate, a mild BHA-type ingredient
- You need to remove makeup or sunscreen: cleanse first with an oil such as Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil
Key ingredients
- Betaine salicylate: a mild BHA-type ingredient for a clearer feel
- Tea tree leaf oil: a fresh, clarifying feel
- Cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate: mild cleansing agents
- Styrax japonicus extract and saccharomyces ferment: plant and ferment extracts for comfort
- Allantoin: soothing
Texture and finish
A clear gel that works into a light lather and rinses off cleanly, without a film or tight feel.
Where it goes in your routine
On its own in the morning; after an oil or balm cleanser in the evening. Lather a small amount in wet hands, massage over a damp face avoiding the eyes and mouth, then rinse with lukewarm water.
Quick facts: 150 ml · pH about 5.3 · Contains BHA-type ingredient and tea tree oil · AM and PM · COSRX, made in Korea
Will it remove makeup or sunscreen?
No. It is a light gel cleanser for a morning wash or a second cleanse. At night, remove makeup and sunscreen first with an oil or balm, then use this.
Is it an exfoliating cleanser?
Not really. It contains betaine salicylate, a mild BHA-type ingredient, but COSRX do not state how much, and it is rinsed off. We treat it as a clarifying cleanser rather than an exfoliating step. If you already use strong exfoliants, watch how your skin feels.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
It depends on your skin. COSRX describe it as great for sensitive skin, but it contains tea tree leaf oil, an essential oil, and betaine salicylate, both of which some reactive skin dislikes. Patch test first.
I am allergic to aspirin. Can I use it?
We would not choose it for you. The label on our tubes warns that people with an aspirin allergy may react to the salicylate it contains.
Can dry skin use it?
It can, if your skin is dry but dislikes heavier cleansers: COSRX list dry skin among its targets, and our tube describes a cleanse without the stripping feeling. Follow with a moisturiser. If your skin is very dry or easily irritated, a cream cleanser may suit you better.
- Use on its own in the morning; at night, after an oil or balm cleanser, as COSRX suggest using it after makeup removal.
- Wet your face and hands, then work a little gel into a lather in your hands.
- Massage gently over wet skin, avoiding the eyes and mouth.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, as the tube directs.
- Patch test first: it contains tea tree leaf oil and betaine salicylate. Avoid it if you are allergic to aspirin, as the label on our tubes warns.
