The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 is a water-based serum with five forms of hyaluronic acid, pro-vitamin B5 and ceramides. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 is a water-based serum with five forms of hyaluronic acid, pro-vitamin B5 and ceramides. It hydrates dehydrated skin at several levels, helps it look plumper and smoother, and supports the moisture barrier. This is the current version, labelled "with Ceramides".

What it does

Three weights of hyaluronic acid, a crosspolymer and hydrolysed hyaluronic acid draw water into the skin's surface layers, so it feels plumper and dehydration lines look softer. Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) supports the barrier, and phospholipids and sphingolipids, which The Ordinary call ceramides, help keep that hydration in.

Why we chose it

It is one of the simplest ways to add hydration to any routine, especially alongside retinoids or acids such as Purito TXA 6% + Niacinamide 10% + Retinal Serum. The Ordinary state it is vegan, alcohol-free, oil-free and silicone-free.

Best for

  • Dehydrated skin that feels tight
  • The look of fine dehydration lines
  • Oily or combination skin that wants hydration without oil
  • Skin using retinoids, acids or other strong actives

Not ideal if

  • You want it to replace your moisturiser: it is a water-based layer, so seal it in with a cream
  • You prefer a richer serum feel: The Ordinary say this version is lighter than their Original Formulation
  • You want a Korean-made formula: The Ordinary is a Canadian brand

Key ingredients

  • Hyaluronic acid in five forms, including sodium hyaluronate (the 2% on our box): multi-level hydration and a plumper feel
  • Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5): supports the barrier and moisture
  • Phospholipids and sphingolipids (ceramides): help lock hydration in
  • Glycerin: draws water into the skin

Texture and finish

A lightweight, water-based serum that The Ordinary say absorbs quickly and dries to a non-tacky finish, so it layers easily under creams and sunscreen.

Where it goes in your routine

After cleansing and toner, before heavier serums, creams or oils. Apply a few drops morning and evening, as The Ordinary direct, then moisturiser, and sunscreen by day.

What to expect

Skin feels hydrated straight away. A smoother, plumper look builds with steady twice-daily use.

Quick facts: 30 ml · Hyaluronic acid 2% + B5, with ceramides · Vegan (brand-stated) · AM and PM · The Ordinary, made in Canada

  • Morning and evening, after cleansing and toner, apply a few drops to the face, as The Ordinary direct.
  • Follow with any heavier serums, then moisturiser to keep the hydration in.
  • In the morning, finish with sunscreen.
  • It sits happily alongside retinoids and exfoliating acids, so it is a simple way to add hydration on the evenings you use them.
  • Use only on unbroken skin and patch test first, as The Ordinary advise. If irritation occurs, rinse off and stop using it.

Good to know

  • The Ordinary describe it as vegan, alcohol-free, oil-free and silicone-free
  • No fragrance and no essential oils in the listed ingredients
  • Hyaluronic acid is a hydrator, not an exfoliating acid; citric acid adjusts pH
  • Made in Canada by DECIEM, not a Korean product

What does the "2%" refer to?

It is part of The Ordinary's product name for the hyaluronic acid in the serum. On our box, the Korean ingredient list prints 2% next to sodium hyaluronate, the first form listed; The Ordinary don't say how much of the other four forms is used. Hyaluronic acid is a hydrator, so the figure is not a strength in the way an exfoliating acid or retinoid percentage is.

Is this the version with ceramides?

Yes. The list on our box includes phospholipids and sphingolipids, which The Ordinary describe as ceramides, and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid as a fifth form. The Ordinary say this version is lighter than their Original Formulation.

Can I use it with retinal or exfoliating acids?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid is a hydrator, not an exfoliating acid (the citric acid in the list adjusts pH), so it pairs well with stronger actives such as Purito TXA 6% + Niacinamide 10% + Retinal Serum.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

It can be. The Ordinary describe it as ideal for sensitive skin, and there is no fragrance or essential oil in the list on our box. They still advise a patch test, so do one if your skin reacts easily.

Will it replace my moisturiser?

No. It is a water-based hydrating layer. Seal it in with a cream, especially if your skin is dry.
