I never really believed the toner makes much difference, but this actually does. I use it after the cleansing oil and gel and it feels as if I’ve applied moisturiser. Great product

i’ve been using the fragrance‑free black rice toner nightly—it’s hydrating without that annoying sticky after‑feel. gets absorbed pretty quick and makes my skin feel smooth and ready for serums. it’s gentle too, even when i use retinol later. wish i’d found this sooner.

Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner is a light, hydrating toner with fermented black rice extract (2,000 ppm, 0.2%), bamboo shoot bark extract and hyaluronic acid (600 ppm, 0.06%). This is the version for sensitive skin, free of alcohol and fragrance, and it leaves tight-feeling skin soft and hydrated.
What it does
Rice extract and bamboo shoot bark extract help skin hold on to water, and hyaluronic acid adds a light layer of hydration. Betaine, glycerin and beta-glucan add more moisture, so skin feels softer and more comfortable before serum and moisturiser.
Why we chose it
We chose it as a simple hydrating first step for skin that reacts easily. We read the box ourselves: it says free of alcohol and fragrance, lists hyaluronic acid at 600 ppm (0.06%) and rice extract at 2,000 ppm (0.2%), and carries PETA Approved and Vegan marks. It layers well under Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence and Black Rice Hyaluronic Cream Unscented.
Best for
- Dehydrated skin that feels tight after cleansing
- Sensitive skin that avoids fragrance and alcohol
- Dry or combination skin
- Layering thin coats for a dewy, glass-skin look
Not ideal if
- You want exfoliation: there are no exfoliating acids
- You prefer a milky toner: try Beauty of Joseon Glow Replenishing Rice Milk
- You react to plant extracts: it contains several, such as skullcap root extract
Key ingredients

Light and refreshing, and easy to layer.

Good to know
Haruharu also make a scented version with lavender oil and alcohol. This listing is the one without them.

Good to know
- The box says free of alcohol and fragrance
- No essential oils and no exfoliating acids
- PETA Approved and Vegan marks on the box
- Box caution: stop and consult a dermatologist if a red rash, swelling or itching appears during use or after sun exposure; do not apply to scars, eczema or dermatitis; keep out of reach of children; store away from direct sunlight.
Is this a toner or an essence?
In practice it does both jobs. Haruharu call it a toner in the name, and our box calls it "The First Essence". It is the light hydrating step straight after cleansing and before serum, so you don't need a separate toner as well.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
It is made for it: our box says "for Sensitive Skin" and "Free of Alcohol & Fragrance", and the list has no essential oils and no exfoliating acids. It does contain several plant extracts, such as skullcap root, pulsatilla and Sichuan pepper fruit extracts, so if your skin is very reactive, patch test first.
Can oily skin use it?
Yes, it is a good fit for many oily skins. It is light and refreshing, there are no oils in the list on our box, and it adds hydration without weight.
Will it brighten dull skin?
Only in the sense that well-hydrated skin looks fresher. There is no brightening active in it. If dullness or uneven tone is your main concern, add a brightening serum after it.
Can I use it with retinal or exfoliating acids?
Yes. It contains no actives of its own, so it works as the hydration step before them.
